October's Picture Books

October's Picture Books

Jack and the Baked Beanstalk
by Colin Simpson

A great retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk with nice characters and a happy ending.  You could compare this book to a traditional retelling and Jim and the Beanstalk by Raymond Briggs.

Oh, No!
by Candace Fleming
and Eric Rohmann

A group of jungle animals are trapped at the bottom of pit and are at the mercy of a hungry tiger.  This book provides a great demonstration of the trait of caring.

The World's Greatest Lion
by Ralph Helfer
and Ted Lewin

An orphaned lion is rescued and becomes a Hollywood movie star.  This book would be great for starting a debate on the ethical treatment of animals.

Abe Lincoln's Dream

by Lane Smith

A young girl takes Abe Lincoln's ghost on a tour of present day United States of America and Abe asks the girl some tough questions about the current state of America.  These questions would be a great place to start a classroom debate as well.
