Taran, the assistant pig keeper, sets off with a band of heroes to snatch the Black Cauldron from the evil King Arawn, but when the band arrives they discover the cauldron has already been stolen.
Within the confusion, the band breaks apart into several smaller groups. The story then follows Taran's group as they attempt to find the Black Cauldron. Will they be successful or will the cauldron elude them?
